Tarbooz ke chilke ka dal/ Watermelon Rind Dal


Watermelon as a delicious summer fruit . But I never thought that the rind of watermelon will be so tasty. I use it to make dal. You can take this recipe and try it or improvise with your own creative touch. One thing I can promise watermelon rind when cooked is superbly delicious. The rind may not be as juicy as the flesh of a watermelon, but it too have its own nutritional benefit. A 1-inch cube of watermelon rind contains 1.8 calories. The majority of the calories come from carbohydrates, with 0.32 g per serving. While you will not derive a tremendous amount of macronutrients from eating watermelon rind, this food does contain some vitamins. One serving provides 2 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C and 1 percent of the vitamin B-6 your body requires every day. Cooking time :  25 minutes
Serves :  4 to 5 

Ingredients : 
1 watermelon rind cut into cubes 
1 cup dhuli mung dal ( yellow moong dal)
½  tsp turmeric powder
½  tsp ginger paste 
2 tej patta / bay leaves
½  tsp whole cumin 
1 whole red chilly 
1 green chilly chopped 
1  tsp sugar 
2 tsp  oil 
1 tbsp  butter
 Salt to taste

Methods of Cooking 
Remove watermelon flesh from rind and reserve flesh for another use. Scrape off and discard pink flesh from rind, then cut rind crosswise into 2-inch-wide strips and remove green peel with a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife. Discard green peel. Cut white rind into cubes. Now take wash the dal and put it on pressure cooker with the watermelon rind cubes with it add two cups of water. Now pressure cook till the dal is well cooked and rinds are tender. Now heat oil in a pan. Add whole cumin and red chilly. When the cumin seed start to splutter then add the dal with watermelon rind. Add more hot water if needed to get the semi thick consistency.Let it come to boil. Add salt, turmeric powder, sugar. Mix well. Let it cook for another 8 to 10 minutes. Then add butter mix well. Serve with rice, roti or parathas.
